Review On Kids Country Calendar

Kids Country Calendar Review Hi, my name is Harper and I go to Karoro School. I liked this movie best because it was full of cows! The cows were absolutely great actors! The baby cows were all so cute. I love how you filmed the cows being milked and the big machine swirling all the milk around. The car driving to the farm at the start and the car driving away at the end was really clever. But when the farmer was saying welcome you couldn’t hear him very well. Putting the Country Calendar music on at the start gained lots of interest. Your film really represented our place.

Should We Have Zoos

WALT: write to persuade someone of our ideas in an argument.

I believe that it is cruel to keep animals in zoos. They can get scared and they have the right to be free, just like us. It costs a lot of money to get an animal from their natural habitat to a zoo, why should we spend all that money if we’re just going to be cruel to them?

It is cruel to keep animals in a zoo. If an animal is not given enough food they will misbehave, when they misbehave they will be drugged to make them calm. To many drugs can be bad for their health. Why should we punish them, if it's our fault that their misbehaving? In poor countries, animals have to live in small cages and are only given a little bit of food. It’s wrong. What if the animal doesn’t like what its being fed? In the wild they can have what they want, when they want.

Animals have the right to be free. They can get bored and lonely in zoos. Wild animals need to be in the wild, that's why they’re called wild animals. Only a fool would think zoos are okay. However zoos do have breeding programmes for endangered animals but the animals born in breeding programmes are never released into the wild, so the wild population does not go up.

It costs a lot of money to get an animal to a zoo. Sometimes they die on the way to whatever zoo their going to. It is unkind to ship animals to a zoo. As an example of zoo cruelty, SeaWorld in Australia has polar bears. The temperature in Australia can reach up to forty degrees in the summer, when polar bears are meant to be in below zero environments.

I’m not saying that all zoos are bad. Only 99% are bad. Animals belong in the wild and we should let them live the life that they deserve.

The Orchid Mantis

The Orchid Mantis are solitary which means they live and work by themselves. There are several species of orchid mantis. They are a living insect because they move, breath, eat and reproduce.

 Habitat
They live in bushes and small trees, that grow white and pink flowers. Normally white, the orchid mantis can turn itself pink and purple in a matter of days to match the orchids found in its natural habitat, Malaysia and Indonesia.

 Features
Orchid mantises mimic parts of an orchid. Their legs resemble flower petals, with the toothed front pair used for grasping prey. Orchid mantis mimic orchids, so when insects come to pollinate or feed on the orchids they don’t see the mantis because of its clever disguise, when the insect lands on the flower they become the mantises next meal. Female orchid mantises are vibrant pinks and purples, and sometimes white. Females live for around eight months. Male orchid mantises are less than half the size of a female orchid mantis, and are a dull greenish brown color. Males only live around five to six months. Males mature faster than females because of their shorter lifespan.

 Diet
They eat small insects including crickets, flies, fruit flies, beetles and stinging insects like bees. They also eat larger creatures such as lizards, birds, turtles and mice.

 Interesting Facts
The orchid mantis was discovered in 1879 when an Australian journalist took a trip to Indonesia and returned with stories of bug eating flowers. What he actually saw was an orchid mantis. Some orchid mantises are so confident in their ability to mimic orchids, they just hang out on leaves and let the prey come to them…. and it actually works!

The orchid mantis is a true master of disguise.

Book Report

Title: Roald Dahls Revolting Rhymes
Author: Roald Dahl
Illustrator: Quentin Blake
What Made Me Read It: I love Roald Dahl’s books, they’re always amazingly funny. So when I saw this book I decided to give it a go.
What It Is About: This book has all your favorite fairytales in it. Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. Each story is presented as a very long and funny rhyme. Here is a small extract from Goldilocks and the Three Bears:

“This famous wicked little tale
Should never have been put on sale.
It is a mystery to me
Why loving parents cannot see
That this is actually a book
About a brazen little crook.”
Had the chance I wouldn’t fail
To clap young Goldilocks in jail.
Now imagine how you’d feel
If you had cooked a lovely meal,
Delicious porridge, steaming hot,
Fresh coffee in the coffee-pot,
With maybe toast and marmalade,
The table beautifully laid,
One place for you and one for dad,
Another for your little lad.
Then dad cries, ‘Golly-gosh! Gee-whizz!
‘Oh cripes! How hot this porridge is!’’

To find out what happens next, read Roald Dahls Revolting Rhymes!

Harper And Danicas Length, Area And Perimeter

WALT measure length and area using non standard and standard measures.

Respect

WALT use the word art tool to make a poster about RESPECT.

To make this I had to come up with some words that related to respect. Once I had come up with the words, I used the word art tool to insert the words. I changed the fonts and the colours. Then I put them all on different angles. After I did that, I went on to explore and chose a background. I inserted my background and spread it over the whole page. I went on to arrange, and a drop down box appeared. I pressed order, and another drop down box appeared. I chose back to front so you could see my words. And that's how I made my word art poster on respect. Making this poster was really fun.

The Kiwi Centre

The Kiwi Centre

We were in the car on the way to Hokitika. I was thinking about the cool Easter holiday we had so far. Camping at Punakaiki and moving to Westport after two days. It was raining pretty hard so you could hardly hear yourself think in Mum’s small car. Mum thought we should go back home because she was worried the roads would close and we would not be able to get back home. Brandon and me said NO we want to go to the kiwi centre. Mum and Dad said all right because they knew how much we wanted to go there.

When we finally got there Brandon was getting pretty impatient to get inside so it was a big relief when we went inside. Brandon really enjoyed seeing all the animals. We nearly caught a crawly but the one l was aiming at a boy came in with his net all of a sudden and caught him. The one Brandon was aiming at got frightened by some other kids and swam off. My favourite animals were the Gold Mollies. I don’t know what Brandon’s favourite animal was.

After that we went to this gift shop and l saw some Kiwi stickers and New Zealand bird stickers. The New Zealand bird stickers were $1 each but the Kiwi stickers were $2.50 each. They were pretty cool though. There were Kiwis with backpacks and sunglasses, there were Kiwis with swimming-goggles and sun-hats. I ended up buying the New Zealand bird stickers and the Kiwi stickers. It was $4.50 I gave the Kiwi stickers to Brandon and I kept the New Zealand bird stickers for myself.

Overall I had a pretty good Easter holiday.
